Does passing a points test and qualifying for PR make you ready for a career in Australia?

I hear this a lot from new skilled migrants, I passed the points test the industry qualifications test, so that means I was suitable to migrate here and get a new job. New migrants don’t realise this when they migrate, that the points test and qualifications assessment has not much to do with their forthcoming job search. Yes its skills based, but it’s the application of the skills that differs. Skills & points tests are based upon data which tells the government for which skills the overall, generic demand is increasing. It is based on various industry gap analysis reports. But just because they passed through the points test and were qualified does not automatically mean they would get a job in Australia easily.

Job search is a totally different process. It’s dependent on lots of other things. The Australian job market is complex and works differently in different skills areas or clusters. While one type of skills-set would be in great demand in one area or state say Mining in WA, other skills would be required in QLD.  One type of IT skills-set would be in demand in only the banking industry or a section of the banking industry, but new migrants won’t know all this. The accounting person needs to know ‘Tally’ software is not really used in Australia unlike in Asia.  But there are 4 or 5 accounting software’s, learning only 1 or 2 is essential. But which ones?

They really need a job expert who is well aware of the current state of the job market and has this key knowledge, experience and contacts to help them out.  Which skilled migrant can get a job- where? and how soon?  This career expert can do a skills gap analysis with respect to the demand for various skills-sets within the job market and those on offer with the new migrants.
