I just need help with my resume

As a Career Coach for job seekers and new migrants, I do get quite a few calls which have these or similar words in the main theme of the discussion. The job seeker is not having much success, has been trying for jobs for some time, but not getting results. While ideally they should have been seeking help professionally the first time, when they started job hunting, they have gone on with their job search, hoping to get a different result, but using the same process, time and again.
The conversation goes mostly along the lines of “I know there are jobs out there for me, I am perfect for them, only problem is my resume. Can you please have a look at my resume, I need help with me resume”. While I am trying to explain to them this is like going to Pharmacist and telling him that you need antibiotic tablets without a prescription acting as Doctor, Nurse and Pharmacist all in one, instead of being the patient. It’s also a little bit, I know what’s best for me attitude as well. Most of the time, it doesn’t work. Reason being it’s a solution, but not the real solution for the real problem. It’s a partial solution for a bigger problem. It’s like using a band aid quick fix to heal all types of different internal wounds or diseases.
My former boss used to call this trying to fix a square peg in a round hole. Most of the times my friends ‘your resume’ is not your biggest or main problem. Don’t get me wrong, a good professional proper resume will go a long way in helping you secure a new job, and you do need one, but most of the time, your resume is not the only problem or main issue in your job search. There might be lot of different issues that you need to overcome in your successful job search process. There are different problems in terms of one particular candidate not getting a job, it might be the CV, the process, the interview, the psych- test, the references, the lack of skills or qualifications or local experience. I can go on and on about this, there can be so many issues, however the approach mostly is the problem is just my resume.
So please be open minded and realise that the days when someone just a changed a resume and added some new words to get interviews without having any real credible skills or experience don’t exist anymore. Yes at times there is a problem with your resume, but you need to be sure it’s not something else which is the real issue. Try to get professional help in firstly identifying the issues that are acting as obstacles in your job search, get skilled, understand what are problem areas and then overcome them using professional career advice. Every job search issue is different and will have solutions not just a new resume solution. The economy needs you; yes there is a job out there for you, the new migrant job seeker. Professionals are there for a reason. I would be interested in knowing your views on this topic.
